On behalf of the Trumbull Senior Community Committee I want to thank everyone who participated in this effort to bring a new senior center/community center to our community. While our effort came up a little short, the vote showed there is a significant portion of Trumbull’s population that believes in and will support a new senior center/community center for all our citizens.

Every one of you whether you gave an hour or a day or weeks of your time, helped advance the effort. We hope that we can count on you when next we get a chance to make this dream a reality.

That said, there are individuals whose contributions deserve special note:

Mike Ganino, our fearless leader, who though he had to face some health issues during the campaign was always there when it counted.

Ron Foligno, whose presence at the Senior Center, at the library, on street corners and at meetings was helpful in a hundred ways.

Mark Ryan, who was a steadying and thoughtful presence throughout the campaign and brought management and leadership experience to our effort.

The library team: Ron Foligno, Mark Ryan, Beatrice Oleyar, Judy Edwards, and Alice Targowski whose presence helped sway library patrons to our cause.

Jerry Gregory, our sign captain par excellence, who got our message out to lawns all over town.

Eve Rothbard, another calm and steadying presence whose insights helped shape our strategy.

Linda Randall and Catherine McGeary who hosted house parties to help spread the word.

Lori Hayes-O’Brien, though not a member of the committee, provided facts, figures and a perspective gained from 10 years of working on the project as part of the Community Facilities Building Committee, to support our case.

Others whose contributions are worthy of special note are Milton Chin, Bob Abercrombie, Marla Rubin and Diana Taormina.

I’m sure I’ve left out others who deserve recognition, and I apologize. But know that your efforts and friendship have brightened our lives and made our community a better place to live. I trust our friendships will grow as we move into the next chapter of Trumbull’s future.

Why now?

The current center, in a repurposed school, is more than 100 years old. It is outdated and would be cost-prohibitive to bring up to contemporary standards and requirements.

Our seniors deserve the best

Trumbull’s seniors have always been there for our community. Whether as taxpayers or in hundreds of volunteer roles, they have helped make Trumbull the kind of place we all want to live. Now it’s time to give them a center that can serve the needs of our senior population.

What the new center will bring

The new center will be a state-of-the-art facility, providing recreational and meeting spaces, services geared to the needs of seniors, ample parking and a food pantry to serve all our needs. It is located on a bus line and near the center of town. It has been designed to minimize the impact on surrounding properties. We believe that, once built, it will be an asset not only to our community but to the neighborhood.
